Araçatuba Peak Trail

The Araçatuba Peak Trail, in Tijucas do Sul (Paraná), is the kind of place that flips you inside out and sends you back with a renewed soul. I'm not exaggerating. From the top, the view is cinematic—and the hike up is a mix of challenge and reward.

Have you ever felt the need to disappear from the world for a few hours… just to reconnect with what really matters? Ever imagined waking up above the clouds, with the sunrise painting the mountains of Paraná and Santa Catarina in gold? That’s Morro do Araçatuba, in the heart of the Serra do Mar mountain range. A place where the cold is not just a sensation—it’s part of the experience.

Where is Morro do Araçatuba?

Morro do Araçatuba is about 65 km from Curitiba and 130 km from Joinville, with access via BR-376. The trailhead is at Parque Araçá, a private property in Tijucas do Sul, with parking and restrooms available.

Quick tip:Coming from Joinville? Take BR-101 to Garuva, then BR-376 toward Curitiba. After the state border toll, watch for the Matulão exit. From there, it’s about 5 to 6 km on a dirt road to the park.

What is the trail like?

The main trail to the summit is around 3.8 km one-way, with nearly 800 meters of elevation gain. Yes, get ready to work those legs. It starts gently in the forest, with shade and even a few natural springs.

But soon the vegetation changes—alpine meadows take over, the terrain becomes rocky, and the climb gets… straight to the point.

While there are no technical sections, the hike demands stamina and attention to the white arrows painted on rocks.

Reaching the summit is emotional. Before you even arrive, you can spot peaks like Morro da Baleia and the Bay of Guaratuba in the distance.

And once you're there… silence, cold wind, and a 360º view that makes it all worth it.

Returning: Lapinha Trail (optional)

If you want a change of scenery, you can come down via the Lapinha Trail. It’s 6.2 km long, with a gentler slope and sights like waterfalls and even a natural pool. It’s longer but more scenic, offering a fresh perspective on the Araçatuba area.

Heads up:Use a navigation app like Wikiloc—there are forks and cattle trails along the way.

Camping at the Summit? Yes—and it’s unforgettable.

Pitching a tent at 1,673 meters, watching the sun set over a sea of clouds, and waking up to crisp air and a pink sky. Is there anything more intense? But note: the summit is exposed, with no facilities at all. Bring everything—water, food, a strong sleeping bag, a stove, and serious cold-weather clothing.

    • Food: Fruit, sandwiches, nuts, and chocolate are great options.

    Best Time to Go?

Safety & Respect for the Mountain

Araçatuba is accessible, but don’t underestimate it. Many have gotten lost, run out of water, or had trouble with the weather. Be well-prepared, bring everything you need—and take everything back with you.

If it’s your first time—or you don’t have much hiking experience—don’t go alone.

The Araçatuba Peak Trail is one of those experiences that stays with you. It’s tough, it’s sweaty, but it delivers a connection with nature that makes every step worth it.
